Description

T-shirt featuring “BLACK LIBERAT19N”, our original graphic design in Abolition font commemorating Juneteenth and the movement for Black Liberation.

The halftone screen print portrait featured  is of Union Army Sergeant Nimrod Burke. Originally from Prince William County, Virginia, his family had been freed and moved to Ohio. Burke was a teamster and scout for the 36th Ohio infantry during the American Civil War before joining the 23rd USCT (United States Colored Troops) where he was promoted to sergeant. The 23rd USCT became the first African American soldiers to fight in “directed combat” against Robert E. Lee’s Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Burke served throughout the war, fought in multiple battles, surviving the Battle of the Crater in July 1864, demonstrating exceptional valor like so many other Black soldiers, scouts, spies, and others who aided in the fight for freedom and liberation.

Black Liberation, while signified, celebrated, and recognized now formally in America as a federal holiday, is still very much an ongoing evolution of the revolution. Juneteenth is a reminder, a progress report, a day of accountability calling on the nation that America’s promissory note is past due in funding and bringing to fruition the movement for Black sovereignty.
